What is an essential oil?
An essential oil comes from a plant substance. It can be either from the flower, herb, bark, root or peel. An essence is specifically the cells of the plant that provides the plant with its fragrance. Essential oils are very concentrated, around 200 pounds of lavender flowers are used for just one pound of oil. Essential oils that are made of just one fragrance (and haven’t been mixed with other chemicals) are called true essential oils.
What is aromatherapy?
The way aromatherapy works is that as you smell the oil, the aromas active areas of your nose which then send signals to the brain. Different aromas can send signals to different areas of the brain, hence why different essential oils have different effects. Some people believe that you can apply certain essential oils to joins to relieve physical pains, however it is usually not recommended to apply oils to the skin as they often have irritating properties and your skin can be allergic to them, if you choose to apply to your body then be sure to dilute them with a carrier oil first. It is considered a bad idea to drink essential oils unless it has been confirmed to be fine by a medical professional.
